“Is a Morepork some kind of pig?!” No! A Morepork is a New Zealand native bird, it is sometime referred to as a Ruru in Maori.

Appearance
A Morepork has bright yellow eyes and a speckled brown body, They are about 29cm long and weigh 175g. The Morepork is named after its call, they are very sensitive to light. Moreporks can turn their heads 270 degrees, WOW!

Diet
Moreporks eat small mammals like mice and rats. They also feast upon large insects like; weta, huhu beetles, large moths and cicadas, as you can see Moreporks consume lots of animals and insects. The Morepork glides a few feet off the ground and once it spots its prey it steals it, The prey is now gone.

Breeding

Moreporks usually breed in spring or summer, they lay about 1 to 3 eggs, the eggs take 25 days until they are hatched. The nest is mostly in trees because Moreporks are mainly found in trees.
