Inquiry/Art Report

In class we have been doing Inquiry/Art on New Zealand artist. This week we got to choose an artist to write about. I worked with Megan and we choose Brooke Fraser. Here it is

Persuasive writing

We have heard that Hastings City Council are going to build a Countdown on Pakis Paddock. OH! NO. I have written my opinion on weather or not I want a countdown built on the paddock. Here it is:

Dear Hastings City Council, I strongly disagree with a countdown being built on Pakis Paddock at Parkvale school. My reasons for this are;

Pakis Paddock is very sentimental to our school, it represents a teacher who worked here for 42 years! Her name is Ray Paki, the field was made after her so that we will never forget her.

Secondly, All the pollution and rubbish from the countdown customers will go into our school and that can lead to health issues for the students here at Parkvale. It can also destroy our wonderful environment and rot the wood on our playgrounds.

Lastly, if you build this countdown, then where will the people park their cars? Also it will mean x10 more traffic and there is already enough traffic in the morning and afternoon do we really need more? Too much traffic can lead to a lot of trouble and the students here can get badly hurt and so can the drivers.

So those are my reasons for you to NOT build a countdown on Parkvale School. I really hope you have enjoyed listening to my reasons.

Report writing

In class we are learning about New Zealand birds. I choose the Morepork. Today we wrote about our bird. Here is my writing:

Image result for Moreporks
Moreporks
“Is a Morepork some kind of pig?!” No! A Morepork is a New Zealand native bird, it is sometime referred to as a Ruru in Maori.

Appearance
A Morepork has bright yellow eyes and a speckled brown body, They are about 29cm long and weigh 175g. The Morepork is named after its call, they are very sensitive to light. Moreporks can turn their heads 270 degrees, WOW!

Diet
Moreporks eat small mammals like mice and rats. They also feast upon large insects like; weta, huhu beetles, large moths and cicadas, as you can see Moreporks consume lots of animals and insects. The Morepork glides a few feet off the ground and once it spots its prey it steals it, The prey is now gone.

Breeding

Moreporks usually breed in spring or summer, they lay about 1 to 3 eggs, the eggs take 25 days until they are hatched. The nest is mostly in trees because Moreporks are mainly found in trees.

Persuasive writing

WALT persuade

Purpose: To persuade your audience to agree with your perspective. By sharing our opinion with others to make them believe your point of view.

In class we do MLE (modern learning environment) writing and right now we are discussing debates. We had three options
1. Coke is an everyday drink for children
2. School uniforms should be banned
3. There should be no age limit to driving a car

I choose the first option. Here is my persuasive writing:

Dear Reader I strongly disagree with  children drinking coke all day everyday here are my reasons why:

Coke is very unhealthy, It can give you cavities and it breaks away the protective layer of the teeth. Also coke can make you obese and it keeps you up.
Too much sugar = Too much energy

Secondly coke gives children (and adults)
diabetes which can lead to cut off limbs and that can lead to death. Coke has no fibre so your liver can’t process it. The sugar makes you very hypo and messes with your health and well being.
Lastly coke is a drug,Coke contains phosphoric acid which is an illegal drug in some countries. Also coke is highly addictive and it gives you mood swings one minute you might be happy the next you're sad or mad.

So those are my reasons to not give coke to children instead give them a nice cold glass of water free from the tap.  I hope you listened to my reasons and learnt a thing or two.

Kahurangi Dance company

We watched the dance company today, and my teacher asked us to write a reflection on what we saw. Here is my reflection i have shared with you.

The show begins and the dancers creep onto the stage… “KIA ORA”  shouts one of the dancers “KIA ORA” we all screech back.

Pania of the reef …

“Now our first dance is about a beautiful lady called Pania and how she got turned into a reef” explains the leader of the group. The music beams across the hall and the dancers begin their dance of Pania. As the gorgeous Pania character walks onto the stage I hear one of the men shout a chant to the audience, The gorgeous lady (Pania) explains how she happily plays with the other fish in the sea. Then one day a man of a tribe came to a stream to get some fresh water when he saw the beautiful lady watching him from the bushes (pania was fascinated with this man so she watched him) He was fond of her so he asked her to marry him,  secretly, she accepted. One night Panias love made her cooked food (Pania was not allowed to eat cooked food because she wouldn’t be able to go back to the sea) and he fed it to her, she screamed and the fish of the sea turned her into a reef. Some people say that they still see Pania across the sea.

There were many others and the dancers were very enthusiastic but Pania of the reef was my favorite because it was really interesting and I learnt a lot. I would definitely recommend watching that again because those dancers were truly amazing and i’m sure you and many others will love it :)
