Aroha

In our class we had to write about Aroha. Aroha means love in moari <3. Here is my story I have shared with you

Aroha
It was a warm sunny day, I remember it clearly, she glared at me with utter delight. A big fat smile crept on her face “you know how immature we are?” she giggled. “Uh YEAH” I smirked. “LOOK AT IT!!!” She screeched. There right in
my left eyeball was a tiny stick figure neck and big round fat circle and tiny legs! My face went red and my lungs felt like they were gonna explode as I laughed. I watched her fall to the ground “hanzy…. are you….. alright…?”
I mumbled trying to catch my breath “HAHAHA!” She cackled. Watching my cousin smile filled my heart with Aroha

India presentation

In Totara hub we are learning about different cultures. This fits in nicely with Diwali (an Indian festival). We were asked to make a presentation all about India and India's culture. Here is my presentation:

Also for our Diwali we had henna done. Henna is a temporary tattoo made from leaves. You squirt it onto your skin and then it flakes off, and underneath is the tattoo:

On the left is Megan and on the right is Charlotte (Me).

Calendar art.

In room 19 we have been given the opportunity to design our own calendar art. My calendar art is about my beloved cat: Ninjah who passed away this year (2015). Here is a photo of my art:

Here is my pitch black cat staring into the beautiful sunset as he sits upon my white picket fence. I wonder what he is thinking? Let me know in the comments.

England attempts the Haka

England attempts the Haka!

We have recently heard about England attempting to do the Hakarena. If you are unsure what the Hakarena is, it is the Macarena but the Haka version. Here is the video of the Hakarena

My thoughts: I think it is quite offensive to us, But I would be more embarrassed if I was a Pomeranian and I was watching this. These dorks know nothing about the Haka and they never will.

What are your thoughts on this? Tell me in the comments.

The final piece

Here we have the stunning Kea flying over the mountain
tops. He is only a few footsteps away from landing on a
nearby branch to feast on some berries. The koru
represents the branch and there are some grey pebbles
to represent the cold hard ground the cheeky Kea walks
upon.

Inquiry/Art Report

In class we have been doing Inquiry/Art on New Zealand artist. This week we got to choose an artist to write about. I worked with Megan and we choose Brooke Fraser. Here it is

Persuasive writing

We have heard that Hastings City Council are going to build a Countdown on Pakis Paddock. OH! NO. I have written my opinion on weather or not I want a countdown built on the paddock. Here it is:

Dear Hastings City Council, I strongly disagree with a countdown being built on Pakis Paddock at Parkvale school. My reasons for this are;

Pakis Paddock is very sentimental to our school, it represents a teacher who worked here for 42 years! Her name is Ray Paki, the field was made after her so that we will never forget her.

Secondly, All the pollution and rubbish from the countdown customers will go into our school and that can lead to health issues for the students here at Parkvale. It can also destroy our wonderful environment and rot the wood on our playgrounds.

Lastly, if you build this countdown, then where will the people park their cars? Also it will mean x10 more traffic and there is already enough traffic in the morning and afternoon do we really need more? Too much traffic can lead to a lot of trouble and the students here can get badly hurt and so can the drivers.

So those are my reasons for you to NOT build a countdown on Parkvale School. I really hope you have enjoyed listening to my reasons.

Report writing

In class we are learning about New Zealand birds. I choose the Morepork. Today we wrote about our bird. Here is my writing:

Image result for Moreporks
Moreporks
“Is a Morepork some kind of pig?!” No! A Morepork is a New Zealand native bird, it is sometime referred to as a Ruru in Maori.

Appearance
A Morepork has bright yellow eyes and a speckled brown body, They are about 29cm long and weigh 175g. The Morepork is named after its call, they are very sensitive to light. Moreporks can turn their heads 270 degrees, WOW!

Diet
Moreporks eat small mammals like mice and rats. They also feast upon large insects like; weta, huhu beetles, large moths and cicadas, as you can see Moreporks consume lots of animals and insects. The Morepork glides a few feet off the ground and once it spots its prey it steals it, The prey is now gone.

Breeding

Moreporks usually breed in spring or summer, they lay about 1 to 3 eggs, the eggs take 25 days until they are hatched. The nest is mostly in trees because Moreporks are mainly found in trees.

Persuasive writing

WALT persuade

Purpose: To persuade your audience to agree with your perspective. By sharing our opinion with others to make them believe your point of view.

In class we do MLE (modern learning environment) writing and right now we are discussing debates. We had three options
1. Coke is an everyday drink for children
2. School uniforms should be banned
3. There should be no age limit to driving a car

I choose the first option. Here is my persuasive writing:

Dear Reader I strongly disagree with  children drinking coke all day everyday here are my reasons why:

Coke is very unhealthy, It can give you cavities and it breaks away the protective layer of the teeth. Also coke can make you obese and it keeps you up.
Too much sugar = Too much energy

Secondly coke gives children (and adults)
diabetes which can lead to cut off limbs and that can lead to death. Coke has no fibre so your liver can’t process it. The sugar makes you very hypo and messes with your health and well being.
Lastly coke is a drug,Coke contains phosphoric acid which is an illegal drug in some countries. Also coke is highly addictive and it gives you mood swings one minute you might be happy the next you're sad or mad.

So those are my reasons to not give coke to children instead give them a nice cold glass of water free from the tap.  I hope you listened to my reasons and learnt a thing or two.

Kahurangi Dance company

We watched the dance company today, and my teacher asked us to write a reflection on what we saw. Here is my reflection i have shared with you.

The show begins and the dancers creep onto the stage… “KIA ORA”  shouts one of the dancers “KIA ORA” we all screech back.

Pania of the reef …

“Now our first dance is about a beautiful lady called Pania and how she got turned into a reef” explains the leader of the group. The music beams across the hall and the dancers begin their dance of Pania. As the gorgeous Pania character walks onto the stage I hear one of the men shout a chant to the audience, The gorgeous lady (Pania) explains how she happily plays with the other fish in the sea. Then one day a man of a tribe came to a stream to get some fresh water when he saw the beautiful lady watching him from the bushes (pania was fascinated with this man so she watched him) He was fond of her so he asked her to marry him,  secretly, she accepted. One night Panias love made her cooked food (Pania was not allowed to eat cooked food because she wouldn’t be able to go back to the sea) and he fed it to her, she screamed and the fish of the sea turned her into a reef. Some people say that they still see Pania across the sea.

There were many others and the dancers were very enthusiastic but Pania of the reef was my favorite because it was really interesting and I learnt a lot. I would definitely recommend watching that again because those dancers were truly amazing and i’m sure you and many others will love it :)

Reading work

In class we have been doing reading each week here is my reading work from this week. We have to research words, and our questions answers in our KWL chart

Name: Charlotte    Date: 26/5/15
KWL Chart
In the first column, write what you already know about sewerage. In the second column, write what you want to know about sewerage, pump stations and vacuum sewers. After you have completed your research, write what you learned in the third column. What I Know What I Want to Know What I Learned.

What I Know
What I Want to Know
What I Learned

That sewage comes from our toilet, shower, sinks etc

Sewage goes into our lakes and rivers

Sewage travels through pipes
and then goes to a landfill where some of it goes into our soap and hand sanitiser.

Why does sewage go into lakes and rivers?

Can we reuse sewage?

is sewage useful?
because fresh water drainage systems got too full and so they had to put the sewage into the water and rivers

yes we can by extracting and getting rid of the germs.

Not really. Sewage is not helpful for plants nor water but like i said in my question: Can we reuse sewage? we can still use it for water.

Day 2 - Questions (Answers these questions using your text).

But where do you start when an entire city has been brought to its knees?
“Obviously a wrecked sewerage system is a major health hazard,” says Simon Christie, a structural engineer with SCIRT. “Fixing that was our top priority.”

  1. Why was fixing the sewerage system ‘top priority’? because the people of christchurch needed water and toilets to live.

The Three Waters
A city’s water supply is a complicated business! This is because there are three different kinds of water to deal with:

2. What are the three different kinds of water to deal with? Stormwater, drainage water and street water.

Day 3 - Vocab (What do the following words mean. How can these keywords help you to understand the text?)

convey means to transport or travel to a place
sewerage means  drainage from sewage
water waste means water that has already been used
contamination means something that  contaminates or carries something unclean or bad
infrastructure  is the systems of a country fixing  faulty of something
potable is the nice safe water the runs from our taps
liquefaction is what happens when some wet soil loses it strength.
silt is a material of a size between sand and clay it is like soil
biosolids is moisture contents that is inside moisture
vacuum sewer is a system that uses pressure in a piping network.
innovation is a new idea more effective device or process
stakeholders is a person that is in charge of something like a business they make all the decisions.

Day 4
Colloquial expressions - what do the following expressions mean?

“meet the same fate” You and me have the same fate, Which is the same future
“Generally speaking”  Means when your talking and you say “generally speaking” that means that many people say it so you have gotten lots of people's opinions
“every cloud has a silver lining”  Is a sad or upsetting time but there is a comforting or happy side to it eg: if you want the rainbow you have to deal with the rain.
“up and running” Everything is working, everything is ok.

The highlight of my summer!

The highlight of my summer was the excitement in my tummy waiting in my bed hearing all the creaks and bangs from Santa Clause. With his reindeer and his sleigh in his big red suit Santa delivered the presents for me and my little sister. We were very excited to unwrap all the goodies that he had left behind!!
